Unfortunately there were some errors in the published version of this article. These are listed here:

(1) "This no more true....." should be changed to "Nowhere is this more true....."
(2) "Darwin started making observations about organisms..." should be "Darwin started making observations about the inter-relationships amongst organisms...."
(3) "Likewise large-scale observational studies..." should be "Likewise large-scale microbial observational studies...."
